Cisco and 3rd Party Transceivers

I have came across my fair share of unsupported cisco transceivers. Customers will buy them unknowing what their compatibility with cisco. I have seen that the cisco small business branded SFP will not work even with the command enabling it. I have seen many other branded SFP work. These transceivers will show up like this as err-disabled under the show interface command and will display on the console

_UNSUPPORTED_TRANSCEIVER:

The commands that will open this fictionality are:

service unsupported-transceiver

and

no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid

Once the command is enable you will need to reinsert the SFP card. If the device is remote  you can also just run a reload. Remember to write your running!

You will have to ignore the warnings during this process….

Warning: When Cisco determines that a fault or defect can be traced to
the use of third-party transceivers installed by a customer or reseller,
then, at Cisco’s discretion, Cisco may withhold support under warranty or
a Cisco support program. In the course of providing support for a Cisco
networking product Cisco may require that the end user install Cisco
transceivers if Cisco determines that removing third-party parts will
assist Cisco in diagnosing the cause of a support issue.
